Ugh. Alright, I’m in one of my snarky moods. You have been forewarned.
I’m sure several of you are reading this blog because you’ve found me on AdultFriendFinder. I want to preface my following comments by saying that I am grateful for AFF being around, because I’ve met some very wonderful people. Alright, now that that’s out of the way, Ms. OCD Programmer can come out. This site has some serious issues. Like, I have been compiling a list of bugs to report. In fact, I might just do that after I write this. As someone who’s on the site a lot, and just on the internet a lot in general, the usability of a website is something very dear to me. And clearly, if it’s bad, it kinda pisses me off.
I do this kind of stuff for a living. I can empathize: I know that developers are busy people, and that they want to put out the best product they can. But I also know that they are real people who miss things, and also that what comes across as a simple bug to the user can actually be a really complicated problem. I am going to be nice about this; I’ll report the bugs with excellent reproduction steps (because I rock at that) and hopefully things will get improved. See, look, I’m being optimistic. That’s good right?
The real reason I’m sort of rant-y right now is that somehow, unbeknownst to me, other users can’t tell that the site is broken. If you are not familiar with AFF, it has a “feature” which will alert users whenever someone looks at their profile. Now, it’s perfectly possible that I don’t fully understand the mechanics, but the reasonable part of me is highly concerned that this “feature” did not pass any sort of quality testing. I’m sure some of you have no idea what quality testing is, so I’ll try to break it down for you. One of the foundations of testing is to make sure a feature does what it’s supposed to do. Let’s analyze: the feature is called “profiles I viewed”, and it is supposed to be a list of profiles, which–wait for it–I actually viewed. To test: view a profile. Does it show up on the list? Good, we are all green so far. Now, wait a while. Do other mysterious profiles show up on the list? Ones that you never viewed, ones that you’ve never even seen before? Yeah, that’s a problem. And see, this problem escalates because there’s the sister feature, “who viewed me”. And people believe what it tells them. I have gotten dozens of messages along the lines of “You keep checking me out, you must be into me!” This is really fucking annoying. I’m sorry honey, but the chances that I am constantly perusing your profile because I need your dick pics and terribly written about me section to get off are essentially non-existent. Even if I have conversed with said other user, as soon as they claim that I keep checking them out when I’m really not, they start losing points. If we haven’t met yet, and if you haven’t impressed me at all, then I see you as nothing more than a client. I know that sounds cold, but that’s how I have to operate. If you start assuming that I’m actually into you before that’s been established, then we have issues.
But once again, I will try to be optimistic here. I’ll blame the bugs, not the users. Prepare for some quality feedback, AFF.
